Typical of Andalusia: the many Arab influences

Walking through the old town of Ojén (300 metres above sea level), you can see all around you the features of its rich Arab past from over eight centuries ago. The narrow and somewhat hidden streets may be a bit windy, but they lead you past houses partly built into the rocks.

The walls of the houses are beautifully whitewashed and covered with fragrant jasmine and bougainvillea, whether in colorful flower pots or not. Windows and balconies have beautifully designed ironwork and the roofs are covered with Arabic tiles.

All examples of the beautiful architecture and style so characteristic of Andalusian villages.

Close to Marbella and yet in the mountains

One moment you have spectacular views of the blue Mediterranean around Marbella, the next of the green mountain vistas on the Sierra de las Nieves.

Sightseeing in Ojén (Marbella)

If you’re in Ojén, be sure to stroll through Calle La Fuente and take a look at the church ‘La Encarnación'(17º century), built on a former mosque and the fountain ‘Fuente de los Chorros’.

Be sure to visit the caves ‘Cueva de las Columnas’. In the caves you will find, among other things, ancient pillars of prehistoric buildings.

Walking tour of the museums

A former mill near Ojén now houses the mill museum. Old, original machinery is on display. You will also get a nice explanation on how olive oil used to be pressed after the annual harvest.

The climbing routes near Ojén

You’ll find climbing routes about a five-minute drive from Ojén. This is where ‘El Refugio de Juanar’ is located, from where several walks in the Sierra Blanca start. The Sierra Blanca is a spur of the Sierra de las Nieves and guarantees challenging hikes with altitude difference.

The most famous hike is the trek to the Cruz de Juanar at an altitude of 1,178 metres. The Cruz is a stunning viewpoint with a cast-iron cross at the top of the mountain and views of the village of Ojén.
