Romería de la Virgen de la Fuensanta in Coín

The Romería de la Fuensanta in Coín as a living tradition

Every year, during the first weekend of June, the town of Coín comes together for the Romería de la Virgen de la Fuensanta. This traditional pilgrimage leads residents and visitors from the town centre to the Ermita de la Fuensanta. The small hermitage lies just outside Coín, surrounded by open countryside.

The Romería is deeply rooted in local life. It is not a staged event, but a tradition in which religious devotion and community life naturally come together. For those who would like to discover Coín itself more deeply, there is also a blog about the town’s cultural heritage and natural surroundings.

A journey through the landscape

On Saturday morning, the procession sets off towards the hermitage. Decorated carts and wagons, adorned with flowers, branches and religious symbols, move slowly through the rolling landscape around Coín. Horses, donkeys and sometimes tractors pull the carts, recalling the travelling wagons that once crossed the Andalusian countryside.

On Sunday morning, the most beautifully decorated cart is traditionally chosen. The winning group is given the honour of accompanying the image of the Virgin back to the Church of San Juan Bautista in Coín.

The Pereila river

One of the most evocative moments of the Romería is the stop at the Pereila river. Here, pilgrims pause to rest and give water to their animals. According to local tradition, first-time participants were once gently immersed in the river, as a symbolic blessing under the protection of the Virgin.

Music, gathering and shared rhythm

Participants wear traditional clothing and sing or dance to sevillanas and light flamenco music as the procession advances. Despite the music and movement, the atmosphere remains calm and unhurried.

Once at the hermitage, pilgrims first pass quietly through the chapel to pay their respects to the image of the Virgen de la Fuensanta. Only afterwards does the celebration unfold, continuing into the evening and briefly pausing for the mass held in honour of the Virgin.

An experience that stays with you

The Romería of Coín is not something you simply watch; it is something you experience. Whether you are religious or not, the combination of landscape, shared tradition and gentle rhythm leaves a lasting impression.

Thanks to its location, Finca La Toronja offers easy access to the Romería. You can reach the route and the celebrations on foot or by car, without long journeys or large crowds. This balance between participation and retreat also reflects the way we approach our favourite quiet excursions from the finca, where simplicity and rhythm remain central.
