La Luna Mora: a magical festival under thousands of candles
A magical festival under thousands of candles
On 12 and 13 September 2025, the whitewashed mountain village of Guaro (Málaga), near Coín on the Costa del Sol, will once again transform into a fairytale setting. The annual La Luna Mora Festival celebrates the rich heritage of Moorish, Jewish and Christian cultures that shaped Andalusia during the Middle Ages.
From Finca La Toronja it is only a short drive to Guaro, making this magical festival an easy excursion during your stay in the region.
A sea of light
As night falls, more than 25,000 candles illuminate the streets, whitewashed houses and squares of Guaro. Volunteers carefully place the candles in the afternoon and light them around 6:00 p.m. – an impressive ritual that bathes the entire village in a magical glow.
Market, crafts and oriental aromas
At the heart of Guaro you’ll find the zoco morisco, a Moorish-style market with more than 100 stalls. From fragrant spices and Arabic tea to handmade jewellery, ceramics and lamps – here you can taste and experience the atmosphere of ancient Al-Andalus.
Workshops & street performances
La Luna Mora is more than just watching and tasting: join creative workshops such as henna tattoos, origami, candlelight art or jewellery making. Street theatre and colourful pasacalles parades fill the village with music, dance and storytelling.
Music at the open-air theatre
No Spanish festival is complete without music. At the Auditorio de la Luna Mora, an open-air theatre with 1,800 seats, renowned artists perform. In 2025 you can once again expect concerts blending flamenco, Andalusian and Moorish music. Tickets for these shows can be purchased online in advance, while the rest of the festival is free to enjoy.
Food & drink
Throughout the streets you’ll find stalls offering tapas, wine and oriental dishes. Cosy Moorish-style tea houses invite you to relax with fresh mint tea, baklava or other sweet treats.
