Sohail Fuengirola Finca La Toronja

Fuengirola a popular destination on the Costa del Sol?

Fuengirola a popular destination on the Costa del Sol

One of the most popular destinations on the Costa del Sol is the town of Fuengirola. There is plenty to do in this city, whether you like a lazy beach holiday or an active one. Along the coastline runs a long promenade with no less than 8 kilometres of sandy beach, and combined with the marina, you can therefore practice water sports to your heart’s content here. There are also many green parks in the city, where there is always something to do, the “Sohail” castle is worth a visit and there is the “Bioparc Fuengirola”, a very special zoo. So there is something for everyone.

Water sports along Spain’s longest beach promenade

Fuengirola’s beach promenade, Paseo Maritimo, is, at 8 kilometres, one of the longest seafront promenades in Spain. Here you will find a series of fine Mediterranean beaches in close proximity to many bars, restaurants, pubs, nightclubs, discotheques, lounge bars, shops, hotels and, of course, Fuengirola’s marina. The marina offers moorings for boats up to 20 metres and various options: from water sports such as diving to sailing courses organised by the local Nautic Club. A fishing port can also be found near the marina.

Also visit, the largest open-air market on the coast. Held every Tuesday morning on the grounds of the fairground (Los Boliches), this market attracts tourists and locals alike.

Visit castle ‘Sohail’

The castle ‘Sohail’ is the symbol of Fuengirola. Located on a hill just outside the city, at an altitude of 38 metres above sea level, it has impressive views over the Mediterranean Sea. This castle initially consisted of only 1 tower, built in 956 during Moorish rule in Andalusia. It is not known whether it was an observation tower or defensive beacon. Today, after several renovations, it resembles an Arab fortress. The castle is now a venue for cultural activities and concerts.

Many parks and festivals

Fuengirola can be called a green city with its many parks. One of the most interesting parks is ‘Fluvial’, located next to the castle. A river runs through this park and has a boat rental service. Throughout the year, there are many festivals of music, classical dance, ballet, flamenco and theatre. Even the circus descends on Fuengirola twice a year.

Bioparc Fuengirola

Bioparc Fuengirola zoo is located in the heart of the city. This zoo protects biodiversity and works to preserve endangered species. Ecosystems such as tropical (rain) forests have been replicated to give visitors the most natural image possible. Therefore, different animal species live together in one enclosure, as they would in nature.

Experience Fuengirola a popular destination on the Costa del Sol all year round

As you can see, Fuengirola is worth visiting all year round and there is always something (touristy) to do. Would you prefer to stay in a quieter area? Then book your stay at Finca La Toronja. In just 30 minutes you can drive into this beautiful tourist resort, but also have the opportunity to explore many other attractions in Andalusia.
